Business Internet Buyer’s Guide
Understand the differences between broadband, fiber, dedicated access, and wireless connectivity.
Use this checklist to prepare for provider conversations and avoid surprises. Exact service terms and technical requirements should be verified for your locations and equipment.
Start with business requirements
List critical applications, number of users, locations, cloud dependencies, voice needs, upload requirements, and tolerance for downtime.
Understand connection types
Broadband is often cost-effective shared access; dedicated Internet typically offers contracted bandwidth and defined service commitments; fiber describes a physical medium, not necessarily a dedicated service.
Compare more than advertised speed
Review upload performance, latency, service commitments, static IP needs, equipment, installation charges, contract terms, and total recurring costs.
Verify address-level availability
Serviceability and installation timelines vary by building. A provider showing coverage in a ZIP code does not guarantee availability at a specific suite.
Plan for resilience
For critical operations, consider a backup connection with an independent path and automatic failover; confirm that power and on-premises equipment are also protected.
